What user research when?

Christian Rohrer's graphing of user research techniques has been around for a while; he's just written a great article about it for Jakob Nielsen's useit.com.

The graph uses a pair of axes:

  • Qualitative to quantitative (The why to the how many)
  • Attitudinal to behavioural (What people say to what people do)
On these axes, a load of user research techniques are graphed.

The article also talks about the research techniques best placed to support different phases of product development, and gives an overview of each technique.
